The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research organization that produces cutting-edge scientific and policy-relevant quantitative evidence for use by policymakers, donors, and other stakeholders. Based at the University of Washington, IHME's ongoing work provides high-quality measurement of the world's major health problems, assesses how these problems are being addressed, and identifies how best to dedicate resources to maximize health improvement. IHME's approach maximizes cross-disciplinary, quantitative analytic approaches and methods aimed at incorporating all relevant data in order to produce policy-relevant results using ground-breaking science.

About the Position

The incumbent will be a leading member of a research team focusing on developing metrics for gender equality in health and behavioral determinants of health. This team will bring expertise in health metrics to the field for gender equality in health to produce rigorous, actionable evidence that will support decisions and actions to improve gender equality globally. The incumbent will spearhead the analytical work to create a gender equality index for health, explore the social barriers to gender equality in health and the way that unique drivers impact gender equality in health. The incumbent will also work on behavioral risk factors including contributions to improvements in the measurement of gender-based violence (GBV) and tobacco and implications on health outcomes for the Global Burden of Disease Study. This area of work is also going to expand to measuring the gender inequities related to gender based violence as well as primary and second-hand smoking.

The incumbent will use modeling tools to produce estimates for the Global Burden of Disease and related products on an annually updated basis. This will include generation and critique of these results in light of trends in the available data and epidemiological and clinical assumptions where appropriate, determine whether adjustments to models or model assumptions should be made, and analyze results in consultation with other faculty. The incumbent is expected to present the results both internally and externally and to contribute to appropriate peer reviewed journal articles and policy reports pertaining to them. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the expansion of gender equality and behavioral risk factor research for the Institute, including but not limited to consultation with subject area experts around the world, engagement with external partners, and the expansion of the network of collaborators.

The incumbent will also take on an important leadership role in mentoring predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows working in the field of health metrics. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience.

Assistant Professors in the Department of Health Metrics Sciences have an annual service period of 12 months (July 1- June 30). Faculty appointed WOT do not hold tenure because all or part of their annual University-administered salary is derived from sources other than regularly appropriated state funds. Except for this distinction, WOT faculty members have the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as tenure-track and tenured faculty members at those ranks.

Qualifications & Requirements
The successful applicants will have an MD, PhD, or foreign equivalent in medicine, epidemiology, population health, health metrics, biostatistics, public health, statistics, health informatics, health economics, health policy, or other relevant subject. The successful applicant will have a proven record of quantitative research in health metrics including statistical modeling using and synthesizing multiple and large data sets.
