Job Description:

Job Summary: The Preschool Teacher of the Deaf is responsible for delivery of academic instruction aligned with Washington State Early Learning and Development Guidelines while maintaining the health, safety and welfare of students. This position, in conjunction with other district staff, facilitates a supportive learning environment both in and out of the classroom. The Preschool Teacher of the Deaf is central to the strategic plan and overall mission of the agency including promoting positive citizenship for students. Qualifications: Required Education and Experience: 1. Master's degree in Deaf Education. Required Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities: 1. Ability to communicate fluently with students, school staff, parents, and school district personnel using American Sign Language (ASL) and written English. 2. Ability to appropriately balance the quality of work with the ability to meet deadlines. 3. Ability to use professional judgment and willingness to participate in staff development and training activities. 4. Ability to work with a variety of professionals and para-educators in a variety of environments in an open, honest and professional manner to promote an effective instructional team. 5. Maintain ongoing support for students with special needs. 6. Knowledge of unique educational needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, including knowledge of ASL, Deaf culture and community. 7. Ability to use technology effectively. 8. Understanding the roles and responsibilities or certificated/licensed staff and para-educators. 9. Ability to practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality. 10. Knowledge of and ability to follow health, safety, and emergency procedures of the agency. 11. Staff is expected to maintain an orderly learning environment, provide student direction, implement administrative directives and maintain control under potentially stressful situations. 12. Certificated Staff work with students and other professionals to foster a positive learning environment and maintain a safe and healthy environment in a variety of academic and related settings including recess time, physical education classes, field trips, and other special activities involving outdoor activities. 13. Staff is expected to complete all duties as assigned and maintain a schedule in accordance with the designated work day. 14. Must have good human relations and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to keep confidentiality and show initiative when appropriate. Preferred/Desired Qualifications: 1. Maintain professional certification established by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) certification process. 2. Desirable qualification includes prior professional experience working with children who are deaf/hard of hearing. 3. An understanding and training in use of bilingual ASL English strategies in the classroom. 4. Professional experience as a classroom teacher. Required Licenses and/or Certifications: 1. Valid Washington State teaching certificate. Certificated Staff are responsible to maintain certification requirements as designated by OSPI. Essential Job Functions: 1. Perform classroom duties as they relate to instructional delivery for students in a preschool setting. Tasks include: Responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring, and revision of the Individual Education Plan (IEP);-- Provide direct instruction to students utilizing Board-approved curricula and teaching materials including related supplementary materials, teacher-designed lessons and other instructional tools that align with Washington State Early Learning and Development Guidelines as published by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), or other appropriate materials as approved by Administration; Prepare daily lesson plans for instruction;-- Prepare classroom plans for substitute teachers;-- Provide direct appropriate academic and behavior support as needed on campus;-- Establish and maintain a positive learning environment conducive to promote academic and social growth of the student;-- Consistently use effective behavioral intervention techniques and document behavioral data in accordance with school policies and procedures;-- Provide on-going academic support for students with special needs as required 1. Communicate and perform tasks on a routine basis. Tasks include: Provide on-going effective communication with parents and guardians; Comply with the mandatory reporting statute for child abuse and neglect; Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with state and federal laws; Comply with all state and federal laws and school policies and procedures; Participate in required staff development and safety training activities, as funding allows; Serve as an appropriate role model. Other Job Functions: 1. Due to the nature of the preschool classroom, some tasks such as washing toys, food preparation or other cleaning routines are to be expected. 2. Job presence. 3. Cooperation with management team members. 4. Uphold and assist in enforcing administrative regulations and board policy. 5. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect children, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities. 6. Requires the use of multiple communication and technology systems, which may include electronic mail, computers, document cameras, smart boards and web-based resources. 7. Perform other duties as assigned. Working Environment: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following conditions: Significant: The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough terrain or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; recurring lifting of items.
