The School of Medicine Department of Microbiology has an opening for a Research Scientist/Engineer 4. Research in Sokurenko's laboratory is focused on understanding mechanisms of molecular adaptive evolution of genes in bacterial pathogens, including acquisition of antimicrobial resistance, epidemiology, clonality, diagnostic and prophylaxis of bacterial pathogens and multi-drug resistance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Laboratory Duties at the Bench:
  • processing of clinical samples
  • identification and storage of bacterial species
  • performing various testing of live bacteria, DNA and RNA
  • record-keeping and maintaining of lab databases
  • Training and overseeing the work of other lab members.
  • Research Analysis and Scientific Writing:
  • sequencing and analysis of genes and whole genomes
  • data analysis and reporting
  • writing scientific reports
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Managing ordering, record keeping, Lab Biosafety etc.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • PhD in biology, microbiology or genetics
  • Up to 3 months of job-related experience

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Knows the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization.
  • Continues development of technical expertise and knowledge through experience and application.
  • General experience of working in biological lab.
  • General computer skills including familiarity with MS Excel.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with general microbiology, including bacterial culturing, identification, testing and storage.
  • Experience with molecular biology including DNA and RNA isolation, manipulation, amplification and sequencing.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn bioinformatics applications.
