Job Description:
Some of what you'll be doing:
In this role, you will provide expert level mechanical engineering
by leading the design of large, medium, or small projects in
planning, design, permitting and construction phases for Maritime
and Airport facilities. This work could include Heating,
Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Energy Analysis and
Conservation, Plumbing & Piping and/or Baggage-handling
systems.
You will serve as the technical specialist in the application of
advanced concepts, principles, and methods of mechanical
engineering design, including development of project design
drawings and specifications for construction.
You will provide engineering support and technical knowledge to
stakeholders such as other Port Departments and the Northwest
Seaport Alliance (NWSA) as well as solicit and obtain work from
project management groups.
You will assist project and program managers in developing scope,
design and construction budgets, design and construction schedules,
permitting requirements for multiple projects, including both
simple and highly complex capital projects.
You will lead project design teams, at times including management
of consultant support.
You will provide coaching, mentoring, and training to engineers on
how to successfully design and deliver projects.
You will establish and manage project work plans for design teams
based on project scope.
You will coordinate and collaborate with Project Managers to
monitor the evolution of design to ensure target scope and budget
are not exceeded.
You will provide Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC)
functions within the mechanical design team throughout the life of
projects.
You will oversee, review and provide professional license stamping
on engineering bid documents, reports and studies.
Who you are:
Two years of experience may be substituted for one year of
education:
Experienced - You have ten (10) years of engineering experience in
design and construction, including four (4) years of leading
project teams in resolving complex design and construction
issues.
Educated - You possess a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical
Engineering or closely related field and are a licensed
Professional Engineer in Washington State.
Desired - We hope you have a Master's degree in Engineering or a
related field and have experience in HVAC design and construction
of marine and airport facilities.

Engineering Design Expert - You have extensive knowledge of
engineering design and architectural principles. You also are well
versed in industry design development and construction practices,
including methods, standards, contract documents, and compliance
related issues.

non-technical staff. You are skilled in pulling in the right people
to enhance collaboration and gain buy-in on projects as needed.

Innovative - You have the ability to develop new and improved
techniques, systems, processes, standards and guidelines for the
department. You provide technical expertise to both internal and
external stakeholders, providing solutions to challenging
issues.
What else you need to know:
Driver's License - You will need a valid Washington State Driver's
License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to
travel locally to project sites.
Work Schedule - Your normal work schedule will be Monday - Friday,
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible
start and end times are available in this role.
Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid
remote/in-office setting at Management's discretion.
Washington State Residency Requirement - Employees must establish a
residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of
employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during
their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is
eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be
performed in Washington State.
Security Requirements - As the successful candidate, you must pass
a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as
well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau
of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon
obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
Security Requirements - As the successful candidate, you must
obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within
the first three months of employment.
