Modern Electron has an immediate opening for a Principal Process
Engineer. You will provide technical leadership and tactical
direction for all balance-of-plant process engineering, and support
scale up of Modern Electron's hydrogen technology platforms. We are
searching for an engineer who has applicable process engineering
experience, working with high-temperature processes, and has
demonstrated excellence in a previous industrial innovation
environment. What does success look like? You will leverage your
extensive industry experience to accelerate the scale-up of Modern
Electron's proprietary methane pyrolysis process. You will also
thrive in our collaborative, dynamic startup environment where we
seek creative solutions and still outpace other companies. -
You will report directly to the VP of Engineering and provide
technical leadership for the Engineering & Operations team,
tackling critical process engineering challenges during the
engineering design phase of our scaled-up process. - -

Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership on methane pyrolysis process
development, from conceptual flowsheet development to detailed
engineering -
Define process constraints and system requirements for in-house
technology development based on knowledge & understanding of
off-the-shelf / OEM equipment capabilities, requirements, and
appropriate scale of readily available industrial balance-of-plant
systems
Lead technical review of internal process engineering design
packages, and deliverables received from outside contractors
(including PFDs, Heat & Mass Balances, P&IDs, and trade-off
studies) -
Develop process simulations and process engineering packages for
scale up design
Perform equipment design & sizing calculations, and define process
criteria to support equipment specification & subsequent
technology/equipment selection
Implement and maintain documentation control framework for process
engineering team, including PFDs, Heat & Mass Balances, P&IDs,
stream tables, unit operation design, equipment specification "cut"
sheets, and corresponding revision control structure
Act as technical authority for engagement with EPCs for process
engineering development activities, and work closely with the VP of
Engineering to build and manage work packages contracted out to
EPCs and/or external design/build groups
Lead technology evaluation and down-selection on unit operations
for scale-up purposes -
Provide guidance on code compliance & regulatory requirements
related to applicable industry standards -
Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineering leads to
develop engineering controls and automation architecture -
Startup environment: Other duties as assigned/as needed to support
the team in a fast-paced & dynamic environment -
Necessary Skills and Experience
10-15 years of professional experience
Direct post-commissioning experience in an industrial oil & gas
environment is preferred -
3-5 years experience as principal process engineer for the
development of innovative industrial technology
Engineering project cost estimation (Class 3 to Class 5)
Knowledge of applicable industry codes, regulations, and standards
for oil & gas and hydrogen processes
Process simulation (PROMAX, HYSYS, and/or ASPENPLUS)
Expert in reading, defining, developing, and interpreting PFDs,
Heat & Mass Balances, and P&IDs
Experience developing Process Control Philosophies, Cause & Effect
Studies, and Automation Plans
Experience with participating in Process Hazard Analysis & HAZOP
Studies
Techno-Economic Feasibility and Technology Evaluation / Trade-Off
Studies
Previous experience specifying & selecting process equipment,
valves, & instrumentation
Experience navigating the following codes & standards in previous
projects:
ASME B31.8
ASME B31.3
ASME B31.12
ASME BPVC
49 CFR 192
NFPA 2, 54, 55, 56, 67, 69, 70, 497, 499
Preparation of technical scope of work for RFP packages, and
experience with client-EPC consultancy engagements (both client and
EPC experience preferred)
Specific experience with carbon black production and/or pyrolysis
processes is a significant asset

Salary range is $100,000.00 - $197,800.00 per year.
