POSITION PURPOSE
The University of Washington Seattle, College of Education, seeks to recruit a highly motivated Research Scientist to apply artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to address critical issues in K-12 education settings. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic interdisciplinary team to integrate the latest advances in AI/ML with education domain knowledge, specifically in STEM education, to promote equitable and improved learning opportunities for both students and teachers.

This is a full-time, temporary position with a twelve-month service period. Continuation of this position is dependent upon funding.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
We seek a Research Scientist who will take the lead in the core areas of developing and implementing key AI/ML initiatives: AI/ML research in STEM education and EdTech product development. The specific duties will include, but not be limited to, the following areas.

  • Lead data analytics and build backend databases to support research projects and EdTech product development.
  • Develop algorithms and functions powered by latest AI/ML developments and by collaborating with domain experts in effective and equitable math and science teaching and learning in K-12 settings.
  • Serve as Principal and Co-Principal investigators (Co-PI) on research projects.
  • Lead or assist Principal Investigator in writing grants and developing, overseeing, and executing research activities.
  • Coordinate research efforts across teams and support undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Publish in prestigious conference proceedings or journals, and/or assist the
  • Principal Investigator in other academic and public disseminations.
  • Contribute to program and entity strategy development and long-term planning.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with K-12 education agencies and EdTech companies to enhance the broader impact and reach.
  • Other duties as assigned

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    The successful candidate possesses the following knowledge and skills:
  • PhD in computer science, data sciences, informatics, statistics.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong experience in AI/ML, with a focus on applying these methods to solve educational problems.
  • Excellent programming skills in languages such as Python, R, Java, or C++.
  • Extensive experience working with large datasets, including data management, visualization.
  • Strong publication record in AI or related fields.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to lead teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of educational research and experience with EdTech product development is a plus.
