Director of Software Engineering

As the Director of Software Engineering at Tideworks, you will oversee teams of software engineers, and provide leadership, vision, and direction for all software engineering for our company.

What's the job?

From a day-to-day perspective, you will be responsible for understanding customer needs, market demands, engineering requirements, product direction, quality assurance necessities, aligning with defined strategies, and ensuring the timely and high-quality delivery of software products that meet these needs, as well as ensuring the software engineering staff have the skills and capabilities to meet organizational and client needs. You will also oversee the implementation of software engineering initiatives and take responsibility and accountability for championing best practices and ensuring initiatives achieve Tideworks' mission critical priorities and expected outcomes.

Leadership And Strategy Responsibilities
Develop, prioritize, and execute software engineering strategies, initiatives and projects and establish delivery targets.
Pitch strategic proposals aligning products, technical, and quality considerations with customer needs, operations, and processes.
Lead the software engineering extended team to successful delivery of business outcomes.
Manage the software engineering budget, with ongoing focus on personnel, vendor, and product / software / services expenditures.
Build strong working relationships with business leaders to ensure software engineering teams meet expectations.
Support and facilitate innovative and experimental software development work to test new ideas, within bounded cost and time frames.
Work with product management leadership to design, manage, and/or execute product roadmaps.
Talent Management Responsibilities
Work with VPs to develop a workforce strategy to meet the current and future software engineering needs through developing, hiring, and/or sourcing talent.
Manage resource allocation across teams to maximize business impact of resources and ensure each team has the skills and capabilities needed to achieve its objectives.
Manage software engineering talent, playing a key role in performance management, role and competency definition, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
Partner with Human Resources to create learning and development opportunities aligned to the organization's skill and capability needs, and to provide rewarding career paths for software engineering team members.
Build and facilitate a culture that supports learning, collaboration, transparency, and inclusiveness.
Oversight Responsibilities For Software Engineering Activities
Champion best practices and modern software development methods and tools.
Lead software engineering teams and other stakeholders to set goals for improving code quality, maintainability, security, and scalability.
Implement and manage software development status reporting, metrics, and benchmarks.
Manage collaboration with stakeholders and other Leaders to ensure software performs well in production and meets SLAs.
Ensure software is effectively secured and that risks are mitigated.
Oversee management of relationships with consultants, vendors, and contractors and support negotiation of statements of work and business terms.
In collaboration with Leaders, oversee DevOps processes and practices, including automating the handoff of code releases from development to operations.

Job Qualifications

The right person will bring some combination of the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Demonstrated leadership skills and experience.
Strong talent management skills including talent development, coaching, mentoring, and team motivation.
Experience leading geographically distributed teams.
Ability to build and maintain strong cross-functional partnerships at all levels of the organization.
Strong business acumen and ability to understand and drive business objectives.
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in a condensed manner to various stakeholders verbally and in writing.
Strong organizational skills, including an ability to perform under pressure and manage multiple priorities with competing demands for resources.
Knowledge of software development methodologies and best practices.
Knowledge of relevant tools and platforms (e.g., cloud platforms, web technologies, client-server technologies, continuous integration, and deployment), with an eagerness to learn about new and unfamiliar technologies.
Adaptability and ability to manage rapid change in business needs, processes, or technologies.
10 years of experience in software testing and 6 years of experience in managing talent preferred.

Our office headquarters are located south of Seattle's bustling SODO neighborhood and industrial district, near the Port of Seattle's Harbor Marina Corporate Center and the Starbuck's Headquarters. Employees appreciate our digs with office views of the water and Port, and an onsite gym to enjoy. Access by car is easy from I-5 or Highway 99, and parking is free. There is also paved trail access for walking and biking from West Seattle and the SODO neighborhood. We are currently operating remotely due to the pandemic.
