Overview of the Opportunity:

Seattle University seeks an experienced and collaborative leader to serve as its inaugural Assistant Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. Reporting to the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, the Assistant Vice President (AVP) is integral to realizing Seattle University's mission, vision, and values that anchor its commitment to creating an inclusively excellent academic community for all. The AVP is responsible for assisting the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion in leading the strategic development and implementation of policies, programs, and initiatives that support and sustain a culturally diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning and working environment.

This is a high-profile position to provide leadership under the direction of and in partnership with the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion to pursue institutional transformation for inclusive excellence. The AVP is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and assessing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies and initiatives that advance the mission of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) to promote belonging and thriving. The AVP ensures that the goals and strategic priorities of the ODI are integrated systematically across units and functions of the university through data-informed decision making and high-impact practices including recruitment and retention programs to increase and maintain diversity in faculty, staff, and student populations, DEI professional development programs, and other policies and practices. The AVP will serve as a key liaison for the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion to many high-level internal and external constituencies including senior leaders, faculty, staff, and governing bodies; and assist in the collaboration and communication with key functional areas of the university.

About the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Evolution of Inclusive Excellence at SU

Led by the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, the ODI is responsible for the strategic direction of the university's DEI endeavors that facilitate institutional transformation for greater belonging and thriving for all. ODI aims to advance inclusive excellence by working collaboratively across the institution to build the university's sustainable capacity to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into the strategic priorities of the institution, as well as to improve the campus climate and culture. ODI visions a welcome, open, and supportive campus climate for all who learn, live, and work at Seattle University.

ODI's scope of responsibility spans the entire university, collaborating with the President and the Provost, as well as other executive leaders, college and school Deans, academic and administrative departments, student development and student learning and engagement units, and student representatives on enhancing and aligning efforts across units of the university through the review and evaluation of current practices and pursuing emerging DEI strategies, programs, practices, and policies.

The foundation of the work of the ODI derives from the 2016 Final Report of the Task Force on Diversity and Inclusive Excellence. The University's Jesuit mission of educating the whole person, to professional formation, and empowering leaders for a just and humane world anchors and animates the vision and work of the ODI. Thus, the AVP serves an integral leadership role in helping to advance Seattle University's strategic vision and directions adopted in January 2020 of becoming the most progressive Jesuit Catholic University in the world where inclusive excellence is infused across all operations and programs. These commitments are further amplified in LIFT SU, action plan for racial equity and antiracism, a key dimension of promoting inclusive excellence as reflected in our university's vision and goals under Reigniting our Strategic Directions.

Duties and Qualifications:

The successful candidate will bring many of the following experiences, skills, and attributes reflected below.

Essential duties:

Under the direction of and in partnership with the Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion, the AVP must:

--- Provide leadership and coordination to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate the goals and actions related to inclusive excellence including those reflected in the foundational and strategic documents including Task Force Report and Recommendation, Strategic Directions, LIFT SU Action Plan, Reigniting our Strategic Directions, and through the use of evidence-based, high-impact practices, including systems analysis and assessment tools to track progress and effectiveness.

--- Employ effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills to translate the common DEI vision, strategy, and concepts to various stakeholders.

--- Collaborate with the Office of the Provost to provide coordination and strategic implementation for various academic endeavors for inclusive excellence; working closely with deans, department chairs, faculty, and academic staff, and serve as a resource to the academic affairs division of the University.

--- Collaborate with other divisional directors, campus leaders including students, staff, governing bodies, and external constituencies to embed DEI into all campus operations and implement systems of accountability for assessment and continuous improvement.

--- Advance and sustain integration and alignment across schools, colleges, and units.

--- Implement strategies to improve campus climate and foster a stronger culture of equity and belonging through university-wide opportunities to grow intercultural understanding, fluency, and engagement, reduce implicit bias, and nurture productive dialogue across differences. (DEI learning and engagement may initiate out of the ODI and/or in collaboration with other University partners.)

--- In collaboration, develop diverse talent identification processes, recruitment, and retention strategies to ensure that inclusive excellence principles are incorporated in all search and talent-management activities, as well as goals for faculty and staff engagement. (Collaboration with key partners across the university in advancing high-impact practices includes the Office of the Provost, Human Resources, hiring managers, faculty leaders, and related governing bodies.)

--- Serve as a resource for affinity groups and programs, and provide support to faculty and staff diversity initiatives within the University as assigned.

--- Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, professional development courses, programs, conferences, and developing/maintaining professional contacts.

--- Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

--- Bachelor's degree required with 5-10 years of progressive professional-level work experience in an institutional, non-profit, or corporate setting in building and delivering on DEI strategic goals, and related endeavors for enhanced diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging.

--- A sophisticated understanding of the national DEI conversation in higher education and a keen sense of high-impact and evidence-based practices and theory regarding organizational DEI and human development.

--- Expertise and practice engaging issues of DEI with a strong command of contemporary intercultural concepts and issues, including demonstrated experience working effectively with individuals from diverse and marginalized communities, broadly defined.

--- Demonstrated experience with change management.

--- Adept at building relationships and connections across a broad and varied range of stakeholders exercising strong judgment, professionalism, and communication skills.

--- Experience with tools and emerging techniques for measuring the impact of DEI efforts and belonging programs. Demonstrated ability to research, implement, and assess DEI high-impact practices.

--- Experience with key aspects of the hiring process: search planning, recruitment, evaluation, and retention strategies.

--- Experience facilitating education and professional development training sessions and/or presenting training programs.

--- Experience and familiarity with laws and legislations pertinent to DEI, and fair employment practices, including the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1991 Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Title IX, Affirmative Action, Equal Employment Opportunity, and other applicable laws.

--- Demonstrated ability to work with staff, provide project direction, and promote and enable positive workplace engagement.

Preferred Qualifications:

--- Advanced degree (e.g. Ph.D., J.D., M.Ed., etc.) or relevant certification in DEI or related fields such as education, sociology, ethnic studies, human development, public administration or policy, social justice, for example, along with 7-10 years of progressive experience and responsibility in advancing DEI in a complex organization such as a higher education setting.

--- Knowledge of and experience in training, conflict resolution, and mediation methods.

--- Higher education work experience.

--- Experience with grant writing and acquisition, and community partnerships.

--- Experience participating in significant organizational change or advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as acuity in navigating intercultural dynamics within a complex organization.

--- Demonstrated ability to negotiate organizational and cultural boundaries with ease, adapting language and style to context.

--- Demonstrated knowledge of issues of social justice, diversity, and inclusive excellence as fundamental aspects of academic excellence.

--- Experience in a large, complex organization, e.g. university, large non-profit, academic medical center, or a national corporation.
