Position Summary
The position is the senior manager for the law library. The position reports primarily to the Dean of the Law School with secondary reporting obligations to the University Librarian.

The director has responsibility for the law library operations. Those operations include: budgeting, facility planning, hiring and supervision of library staff, teaching of legal research, collection development, oversight of technology needs, strategic planning, development of the law library, and initiating and monitoring library programs and services, especially with respect to faculty research services.

The director facilitates collaborative programs, services and initiatives between the Law School and University Libraries with respect to collections, services, and interests of the Law Library in relation with the University Libraries.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Initiates and monitors library programs and services.
  • Develops innovative strategic plans for a next-generation law library that combines traditional information strategies with new information resources and emerging technologies.
  • Develops, monitors, and prioritizes law library operating budget.
  • Manages law library collection development plans and activities, ensuring that the law library's collection and resources are sufficient to meet the primary goal of supporting the teaching and research needs of the Law School's faculty, staff and students.
  • Manages law library staff consisting of 6.5 FTE professional and three support staff.
  • Supervises the Law Library's legal research program, a program that trains law students in research methods.
  • Manages and develops short and long-term plans for Law Library facilities.
  • Develops strategic plans for all aspects of Law Library operations including facilities, staff, technology, collections, and services.
  • Ensures that the Law Library complies with accreditation standards of the American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools.
  • Provides relevant perspective and expertise about strategic collaborations, projects, initiatives, ongoing services between the Law Library and the University Libraries.
  • Develops appropriate analysis, reporting of relative shared issues and plans effecting collaboration and partnership between University Libraries and Law Library.
  • Participates in Law School committee service, scholarship, and/or other administrative responsibilities.
  • Supports the Law Library's relations with the Law School, the University, library consortia, and professional organizations.
  • Represents the Law School and University by providing leadership and service in local, state, regional and national professional organizations.
  • Provides oversight and responsibility for mutual space, collection management, service delivery, performance management, collections or collaborations as defined by the Law Library and University Libraries MOU.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • MLS degree.
    • Experience with planning, budgeting, and human resource management.
    • Experience with selecting legal materials and in making collection decisions.
    • Ability to manage collaborative and cooperative relationships and programs.
    • Familiarity with operational and strategic issues effecting the providing of legal and research libraries services and support.
    • Knowledge of new technologies and the ability to manage law librarians with empirical skills and training.
    • Understanding of the major changes occurring in the library profession, legal education and the practice of law, and the resulting challenges facing academic and law libraries in areas such as collection development, technology integration, space planning and utilization, and the need for effective staff and organizational development to support rapidly changing user needs and expectations.
    • Ability to make sound and informed decisions; to perceive the impact and implications of decisions; and to commit to action, even in uncertain circumstances.
    • Ability to provide vision and goals for the law library.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to function effectively in a team environment and to work with a wide variety of people.
    • Knowledge of legal resources and legal research strategies
    • Broad knowledge/understanding of library information systems and technology.

      Required Qualifications

      • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, Ph.D., or equivalent.
      • Five years of law library or analogous professional experience with a history of increasingly responsible administrative, managerial, and/or supervisory duties.


        Salary Range
        Base pay is commensurate with experience.

        The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
