Assistant Director of Career Development supports the career development process of students. The Career Development Team seeks to empower students to embrace career development with curiosity, confidence, and courage and to evolve as leaders within a constantly changing professional landscape.
This full-time position will assist the Director of Student Affairs in all aspects of career advising, employer/alumni engagement, event planning, student interest group liaising, career curriculum development, internship requirement administration, and career technology management. Cultivating collaborative professional relationships with diverse students, colleagues, and employers is essential to success in this role. Staying organized, taking initiative, and solving complex problems while planning, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive career development projects and programs is highly valued. Creativity and an eagerness to develop and deliver new initiatives and career-related programming is also important, as well as a deep commitment to student development.

The Evans School currently has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Director of Student Affairs who supports the career development process of students.

    General Description
  • Empower students to successfully manage their careers and advance professionally.
  • Advise current and prospective graduate students on career development concepts and help students identify and secure internships and full-time work in the US and abroad.
  • Plan professional networking events, alumni panels, and employer visits in partnership with the Director and Evans School Student Interest Groups (SIGs).
  • Coordinate the Evans School Internship Requirement for MPA students.
  • Contribute to employer development efforts in targeted sectors, policy areas, and geographic locations, in partnership with the Director.
  • Develop, refine, and teach one-credit skills workshop class "Career Planning for the MPA", in partnership with the Director.
  • Support the online career management system (NACElink Network CSM by Symplicity) and drive the ongoing social media strategy for Career Development.
  • Work with international students to ensure success through individual career advising, partnering with internationally-oriented SIGs, liaising with UW International Student Services, and processing OPT/CPT request paperwork.
  • Partner with Alumni Relations to administer the Evans School Mentorship Program.
  • Create and implement communication plans to regularly disseminate key information.
  • Maintain current career resources and strategize with the Director about new resources when needed.
  • Serve as a backup for the Director when Director is out of the office.
  • Additional duties and special projects as assigned.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Career Development Advising:
    Under the direction of the Director of Student Affairs, provide career development advising to current graduate students on topics including assessing skills and strengths, searching for internships and jobs, building a network, using LinkedIn, navigating career transitions, refining interview skills, negotiating job offers and salary, and marketing a public administration degree. Educate students about the skills needed for various public policy and management related careers as well as the professional associations and alumni networks connected to their interests. Provide career advising and assistance through individual appointments as well as events, classes, and print/online resources. Assist students in learning how to write effective r--sum--s, cover letters, professional email correspondence, and other career documents. Develop and conduct mock interviews and job offer negotiations to prepare students for interviews. Conduct group information sessions to inform students of career development offerings, policies, and procedures during orientation and beyond.

    Career Development Programming:
    Assist with planning and implementing career development events, including networking and alumni/employer panel events, as well as career-related programs sponsored by Evans School SIGs and/or the Evans Student Organization (ESO) and the annual UW Government Career Fair. Participate in key Student Services events such as new student orientation, open house, and graduation. Present career education sessions on resume writing, interviewing, using LinkedIn, applying for federal jobs, negotiating salary, funding internships, and other career-related topics as needed. Produce event materials and signage within Evans School brand guidelines. Create and implement communication plans to regularly disseminate information to students, alumni, faculty, staff, and employers about Career Development happenings. In partnership with the Director, assess current programmatic offerings and, if warranted, develop new and innovative programs to better serve the diverse needs of students, alumni, and employers.

    Evans School Internship Requirement Coordination:
    Coordinate the Evans School Internship Requirement by tracking and reporting on student progress towards fulfillment. Maintain all required administrative documentation including internship planning forms, internship contracts, and student/supervisor evaluation forms. Identify and promote MPA-related internship opportunities in the United States and abroad. Work with employers who are interested in hiring Evans School interns to ensure they are developing high quality internships and help employers source top candidates. In partnership with the Director, continually assess and improve the Internship Requirement to better meet the needs of students, employers, staff, and accreditors.

    Employer & Alumni Outreach:
    Oversee employer visits to campus, including organizing and advertising information sessions, Lunch & Learn panel events, and on-campus interview schedules. In partnership with the Director, identify potential employer and alumni contacts and work to develop mutually beneficial recruiting relationships with those employers or alumni of greatest interest to the Evans School. Conduct phone and email outreach to employers and alumni in targeted sectors, policy areas, and geographic locations in order to grow relationships and develop new opportunities for partnership.

    Technology & Career Management System:
    Support the online career management system (NACElink Network CSM by Symplicity) by uploading data, tracking system statistics, generating reports, approving employer account requests, listing events, posting job/internship openings, and troubleshooting technical problems. Train students, alumni, and employers on how to use the system. Evaluate software/vendor performance and make recommendations to the Director. Audit career resources on annual basis to ensure alignment with best practices in career development. Assist in writing, editing, and maintaining content of career development website (https://evans.uw.edu/career-development ). Use social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter) to brand and promote Career Development programs.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least two years of experience providing career development/academic advising to university students, ideally graduate-level students.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Knowledge of career development theories and job market trends.
  • Familiarity with online career management systems.
  • Demonstrated counseling and advising skills, ideally within a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated organizational and program coordination skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, ideally experience presenting to large groups and adults.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in student affairs, educational administration/leadership, counseling, or related field.
  • Experience with professional internship programs or campus recruiting.
  • Experience/interest in government, international affairs, and/or public policy.
  • International experience and/or interest in working with international students.
  • Experience working in a graduate-level career development unit.
  • Experience with adult learners and individuals making career transitions.
  • Familiarity with professional associations affiliated with career development and a commitment to the professional standards and codes of ethics associated with the field.
  • Comfort with technology and desire to learn new technology systems, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word), Canva (or other similar graphic design platform), Canvas (or other similar LMS), and Symplicity (NACElink Network CSM or other similar Career Management System).
