Rainier Scholars is excited to welcome an innovative and
mission-driven communications professional to our collaborative
team. Rainier Scholars offers a pathway to college graduation for
low-income students of color by providing access to transformative
educational opportunities. The Director of Marketing &
Communications will be responsible for the strategy and oversight
of the organization's marketing, communications, and public
relations efforts. They will be a key member of the senior
leadership team and will act as a primary storyteller and
spokesperson for Rainier Scholars throughout our community.The
successful candidate will be an excellent collaborator who has
experience developing communication strategies and plans, as well
as creating content across many communication channels, including
website, newsletters, social media, video, program collateral, and
promotional pieces. The Director of Marketing & Communications will
demonstrate a passion for the mission of Rainier Scholars,
understand the lived experience of the students and families we
serve, and be able to represent their stories in an authentic and

and over 950 scholars and families whom we currently serve, Rainier

impact. Now serving a new geographic region with the launch of
Rainier Scholars - Tacoma in June 2022, we are poised for continued
growth with a new 5-year Strategic Plan that was approved by the
Board of Trustees in December 2022. As we continue to expand and
improve our programs and services, we're ready to take the strong
Rainier Scholars brand and communications platform to the next
level. We're looking for an innovative, collaborative, and
mission-driven communications professional to join our high-powered
and passionate team. Role Responsibilities: - Reporting to the
Director of Advancement, the Director of Marketing & Communications
will be an integral member of the Advancement Team, while also
collaborating regularly with Academic and other program teams as
well as the Board of Directors. The position's primary focus will
be to lead and develop effective messaging by audience.
Communications goals include: scholar recruitment, donor
cultivation, corporate engagement, community partnerships, and
exposure on a local, regional, and national level. These powerful
communications must consistently articulate Rainier Scholars'
impact, while bringing the organization's mission to life.Strategic
Communications Leadership
- Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications
plan to increase awareness, support strategic plan initiatives,
achieve development targets and programmatic goals, and build
external relationships with the organization's constituencies.
- Set and guide the strategy for all communications, website,
social media, and public relations messages and collateral to
consistently articulate the Rainier Scholars mission and
impact.
- Research and collect data to inform content and marketing
strategy.
- Serve as one of the primary spokespeople for the organization,
including speaking to stakeholders or the public as needed.
- Lead the annual media approach and work plan to enhance local,
regional, and national exposure. Serve as the primary liaison
coordinating all media projects.Content Creation and Oversight
- Produce all print, online, and electronic communication pieces
across the organization; this will include creating original
content as well as overseeing the work of the Marketing &
Communications Coordinator. Projects and publications include
newsletters, social media, event communications, targeted donor
updates, recruitment materials, program collateral, and promotional
pieces for corporate audiences.
- Build-out and strengthen the Rainier Scholars brand; expand
branding guidelines and maintain brand integrity across all
platforms. Support the Marketing & Communications Coordinator and
other members of the staff and board to ensure a consistent look,
style, feel, and language for the Rainier Scholars
brand.Supervision and Cross-Team Collaboration
- Supervise the Marketing & Communications Coordinator, who is
responsible for project management, photo and asset management,
graphics design, website oversight, and social media.
- Work with the Senior Leadership Team and Board of Trustees to
recognize external communications opportunities, challenges, and
emerging issues, and develop strategies and tools to support
them.
- Collaborate with program leadership to document and share
knowledge and emerging best practices to consistently position
Rainier Scholars as a thought leader. Candidate Qualifications: -
Rainier Scholars is seeking a collaborative leader who brings
significant strategic experience in marketing and communications,
and who is a compelling storyteller and communicator. The Director
of Marketing & Communications will demonstrate a passion for the
mission of Rainier Scholars, understand the lived experience of the
students and families we serve, and be able to represent their
stories in an authentic and respectful way. Ideal candidates will
have a Bachelor's degree and minimum of 5 years of professional
experience in marketing and/or communications. We are particularly
interested in candidates who bring the following skills and
experiences, while recognizing that no candidate will bring all the
desired skills and experiences listed below, and that learning
happens on the job.Strategic and Innovative Thinker
- Experience in creating and implementing communications and
marketing strategies for different audiences that align with
mission and goals, ideally for a nonprofit organization.
- Ability to build partnerships and develop relationships and
media contacts to create opportunities for the
organization.Compelling Storyteller and Content Creator
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to
connect with diverse audiences to support them in sharing their
stories.
- Exceptional writer and confident editor, with a creative
eye.
- Experience developing clear and compelling materials in a wide
variety of formats.
- Experience with video production is a plus.Collaborative
Nonprofit Team Leader
- Experience directly supervising staff.
- Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of internal
management and staff, as well as independently.
- Experience with budgeting, planning, and project
administration.
- Ability to prioritize projects effectively, take initiative,
demonstrate resourcefulness, meet deadlines, and respond flexibly
to changing work demands.Experience in an educational nonprofit, as
well as lived experience with the communities Rainier Scholars
serves and the issues the program addresses are a plus.WORKING AT

The Director of Marketing & Communications will be expected to
attend critical meetings in-person, such as the Leadership Team and

Travel to the Tacoma program will be on an as-needed basis. The
overall work schedule of the Director of Marketing & Communications
is flexible; the successful candidate will work with their
supervisor to determine a mutually agreeable weekly schedule. The
Rainier Scholars offices are located in the Treehouse Building
which is home to many other nonprofit organizations and is close to
