The Sonographer will be scheduled for on-call/standby evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed As the region's only Level I Trauma center, Harborview Medical Center (HMC) is well known for innovations and excellence in trauma care and its centers of emphasis: Trauma, Burn, Neurosciences, AIDS/STD, Center for Advanced Reconstruction and Rehabilitation (CARER), and mentally-and medically- vulnerable populations. Our Cardiology department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time (100%), day shift, CARDIAC SONOGRAPHER 1 OR 2. Under general supervision the Cardiac Sonographer 1 or 2 will perform, analyze, and interpret comprehensive, complex diagnostic cardiac ultrasound procedures such as transthoracic echo (TEE), dobutamine stress echo (DSE), treadmill echo (TME), and assist physicians with lab-based or transesophageal echo (TEE) procedures on patients referred for evaluation of suspected or known heart disease, post-operative evaluation of surgical therapy, or placement of cardiac prosthetic devices. They will also tailor examination as necessary to provide accurate representation of cardiac anatomy and pathology as determined throughout examination; monitor patient's vital signs and condition during examination; initiate or perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if necessary. In addition, the Cardiac Sonographer will train ultrasound students from CAAHEP-accredited ultrasound programs and fellows from the UWMC cardiology fellowship program; and maintain certification and current knowledge in the field.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs initial physical assessment of patient, including blood pressure, auscultation, and recording cardiac medications

Using the lab's cardiac ultrasound equipment, under general supervision acquire and edit multiple digital views and presentations representing each element of the lab's protocol, to finally produce an appropriate collection of diagnostic images in the lab's sequence that accurately documents any cardiac pathology present for TTE's, DSE's, and TME's; and assist in TEE's

Performs accurate measurements and calculations on acquired images

Summarizes and enters patient history into the final Echo report

Enters data accurately into the final Echo report

Prepares accurate and complete interpretations of all Echo data for the final Echo report, for approval by the Echo attending physician

Selects representative images from the exam, and composes appropriate annotations for inclusion into the final Echo report

Navigates the Echo digital echo lab system: Calls up and compares images and studies, copying images and entire studies to CD, print and/or FAX echo reports to any location

Participates in approved Echo lab research projects

Maintains certification and current knowledge in the field through journal subscriptions and course attendance

Attends and participates in weekly Echo lab staff meetings

Provides care consistent with professional practice standards, lab and HMC policies and procedures

Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues and others

Performs other related duties as required
In addition to the duties listed above, a Cardiac Sonographer 2 will:

Perform professional level, complex diagnostic cardiac ultrasound procedures independent of physician supervision

Determine diagnostic parameters as needed to acquire accurate images of cardiac anatomy, pathophysiological data, and blood flow analysis relative to patient's clinical presentation, clinical history, and referral information

Have advanced responsibilities in the training of ultrasound students from CAAHEP-accredited ultrasound programs and fellows from the UWMC cardiology fellowship program

REQUIREMENTS:
This position will be offered as a Cardiac Sonographer 1 (CS1) or Cardiac Sonographer 2 (CS2) dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Requirements for CS1:
Completion of a training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), and certified as Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) in Adult Echocardiography, OR, with experience equivalent to criteria for eligibility for taking Board Examination in Adult Echocardiography by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

Requirements for CS2:
Completion of a training program accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), and current certification as Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) in Adult Echocardiography by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS);
AND
One year of experience as Cardiac Sonographer 1
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
