This position is to enhance and promote the total health of patients through oral health management. Managing oral health care applies to patients with oral pathoses, patients with special needs, and patients with oral manifestations of systemic disease and involves providing ongoing oral health care management. This position specifically focuses on serving youth (predominately adolescents) who have barriers to accessing oral health care. Mobile services are offered to multiple school and community sites in King County and portable services are offered at Seattle World School in Seattle in conjunction with ICHS' School Based Teen Health Center. Success in a school and community based setting requires positivity, flexibility and creative problem solving.
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Care

  • Perform wide spectrum of dentistry for patients; act as primary Care Dental Provider for patients; and meet productivity and clinical levels.
  • Diagnose and treat acute and chronic dental problems; provide chronic disease management and preventive dental care and dental education; and provide referral assistance to specialty dental services. Provide after hour coverage pager/phone coverage to patients.
  • Obtain medical, dental, psychosocial and behavioral histories; perform head and neck intraoral examinations.
  • Select, obtain and interpret clinical, radiographic and other diagnostic information and procedures; use clinical and epidemiological data to diagnose and establish a prognosis for dental abnormalities and pathology.
  • Develop treatment plans and alternatives based on clinical and supporting data.
  • Integrate multiple disciplines into an individual, comprehensive, sequenced treatment plan using diagnostic and prognostic information.
  • Discuss etiologies, treatment alternatives, and prognosis with patients and educate them so they can participate in the management of their own care. Develop and implement a sequenced treatment plan that incorporates patients' goals, values and concerns.
  • Anticipate, diagnose and provide initial treatment and follow-up management for medical emergencies that may occur during dental treatment. Recognize and manage acute pain, hemorrhage, trauma, and infection of the orofacial complex.
  • Select and administer or prescribe pharmacological agents in treatment; anticipate, prevent and manage complications arising from the use of therapeutic and pharmacological agents
  • Maintain patient records.
  • May practice all aspects of dentistry such as orthodontics, implants, implant crowns, bone grafts, etc. based on approved credentialing (special privileges)

    Supervision and Consultation

    • Provide clinical consultation for Dental Assistants, Dental Hygienists, and other health professional requiring formal dental oversight under Washington State laws and regulations.
    • Provide clinical consultation for ICHS medical and other dental providers as requested; and assist in providing training, supervision and evaluating the interdisciplinary team.
    • Adhere to dental policies and procedures.

      Quality Assurance

      • Promote the principles of "total quality management" among all staff; assist in the implementation of ICHS Quality Improvement Program including specification of appropriate norms and/or standards for performance on various indicators.
      • Assist in the implementation of specific quality assurance monitoring procedures (i.e., chart audits, record audits, equipment calibration checks, etc.). Ensure results are properly documented; communicate results to appropriate parties; and promote corrective action as needed.
      • Assure protection of individual rights to privacy and confidentiality at all times.
      • Assist in developing dental, pharmacy, laboratory, and ancillary clinical practice policies and procedures.

        Patient Relations

        • Keep patients fully informed on all aspects of clinical program operations about which patients may have normal curiosities, a right to know, or benefits to gained from knowing (e.g., qualifications of staff, procedures for getting prescriptions filled/refilled, what to do in an emergency, etc.)
        • Youth will be unaccompanied at their appointments (no parents/guardians), adjust communications, instructions and treatment explanation as necessary.
        • Engage parents/guardians as necessary (via phone, letters, etc.) regarding treatment plans, consents for procedures or any other information that would typically be shared if parents were present during time of visit.

          Other Functions

          • Support the mobile dental clinic and school based health centers in promoting oral health services as needed.
          • Collaborate with Health Services department staff (specifically School &Health Services Manager and Mobile Dental Clinic Care Coordinator) to achieve program goals and/or grant requirements.
          • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, work plans, performance measures and continuous improvement of service delivery to assist in attaining the program, department and/or organization's initiatives, goals and strategies, and mission through a spirit of service, teamwork and respect. Work well with other employees, follow direction and work well under pressure.
          • Attend all required training and safety meetings; use, maintain and replace assigned personal protective equipment; report all injuries and illnesses to supervisor immediately; complete and submit incident/accident reports as required; report hazardous conditions or unsafe work practices to supervisor or organization's Safety and Health Committee; and follow all safety and health guidelines, practices, policies and procedures and actively support and participate in the Emergency Preparedness Program and tasks.
          • Comply with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, ICHS policies and procedures, including ICHS Privacy, Security and Compliance policies and procedures, Code of Conduct, and the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA).
          • Actively participate in Quality Improvement program and activities; initiate Quality projects and/or process improvement to attain quality service delivery.
          • Other duties as assigned.

            Job Requirements

          • Education ' Graduated from an accredited dental school.
          • Experience ' Two years as a Dentist and/or one year GPR/AEGD Residency. Worked with culturally diverse limited-English or non-English speaking patients preferred. Fluency in Cantonese, Vietnamese or other API language preferred.
          • Other Requirements ' Licensed to practice in Washington State without restriction, probation, or limiting condition or threat thereof. Never been disciplined by any professional or peer review organization, governmental agency, licensing body or any other organization for any action or omission based on or related to quality of care. DEA license. Valid Washington State Driver's License.
