In our pursuit of positively transforming the social-emotional well-being of 100 million children annually by 2028, Committee for Children is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer II to join our Seattle based team (majority of staff is currently working remotely throughout Washington state due to Covid-19). As the Senior Software Engineer II, you are a proven developer who has mastered development best practices and is able to independently solve complex software engineering challenges. In this role, you understand the limits of your tools and know when a problem that exceeds those limits deserves the effort of producing a new tool. You understand the scope and relationships of large features and production stacks for your area. You will help to provide informal technical mentorship to less-experienced engineers on a Scrum team. You will help to find creative and efficient approaches to solving complex problems and delivering on team sprint commitments. Primary Responsibilities Independently design, develop, and test web-based applications according to CFC's software development practices Provide coaching and supervision to less-senior developers Handle large-scale technical debt and refactoring, shape coding methodologies and best practices Participate in code reviews, including signing off on large features and test plans When given a largely understood problem you will explore the solution space, sometimes with numerous points of contacts, to determine the correct course of action Participate in and support initiatives outside of main area of responsibility Provide technical leadership for projects that include one to two individuals Develop database schema changes and version APIs to support new features in close coordination with the Tech Lead and other senior-level engineers Review business requirements and provide optimal, pragmatic solutions and approaches in coordination with Product and Program Managers Follow established processes including SDLC, QA, performance optimization, and others, while defending your own and evaluating team members' code and applied patterns in code review Qualifications Bachelor of science degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience Minimum of 8 years experience working in cloud-based, highly distributed environments Extensive experience in developing highly scalable and composable RESTful APIs between internal and external service layers using industry standards Highly experienced in the digital content management and distribution domains, including EPUB 3, HTML5, CDNs, encryption, protection, multidevice delivery, etc. Highly proficient in a variety of application, data persistence, and orchestration technologies, including: Data persistence concepts, methodologies, and data constructs, such as relational and object, NoSQL, JSON, deployment topologies, and caching layers Software development lifecycle and DevOps principles Key programing and scripting languages, including JavaScript (expert), Node.js, C#, and .NET Unit, integration, and performance testing best practices Web frameworks, including React, React Native Web, and Backbone Authentication, authorization, and identity standards, including Auth0, OpenID, WS-Security, WS-Trust, and SAML 2.0 Expert knowledge of developing solutions within cloud service architectures (Microsoft Azure experience preferred) Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Exceptional problem-solving, analytic, and diagnostic skills An approachable mentor whos viewed as an expert and acts like one, constructively challenging assumptions and guiding more-junior engineers to correct solutions while encouraging collaboration Ability to clearly document solutions and communicate effectively with team members Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work under time pressure Ability to work a flexible schedule, including periods of high volume Ability to learn new technologies and tools rapidly Organization-wide Essential Functions Passion for CFC mission and values Commitment to excellence and desire to delight our customers Ongoing growth and development Support of diversity, equity and inclusion Effective communication and collaboration with team Reliable delivery of results in support of the team's success Working Environment This position is in a general office environment (majority of staff is currently working remotely throughout Washington state due to Covid-19) with frequent computer use This position may require some flexibility in working hours About Committee for Children For more than 40 years, Committee for Children has been helping children learn, grow, and thrive by teaching them how to understand emotions, build meaningful relationships, and resolve conflicts.
