The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine and pathology. Our Laboratory Medicine Department and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, day shift, Clinical Laboratory Technician 1 to join the team. At a semi-technical level, perform simple laboratory collection associated with venipunctures and capillary blood collection from patients, testing and/or prepare specimens for laboratory testing and performs other laboratory work which supports the operation of a clinical laboratory.


Sort and prioritize initial specimens and requests, receive specimens via pneumatic tube system and at the front window

Prepare patient and collection equipment according to established procedures for blood collection

Verify patient identity before performing collection

Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages

Match specimens against requisitions for appropriate tube type

Centrifuge and aliquot appropriate specimen type and quantity as ordered

Process timed urine collections: add preservatives, measure, aliquot, etc.

Assist in orientation, training and support of new employees

Refer testing to other laboratories as procedurally necessary

Maintain complete, accurate, legible records

Clean work area at least once each shift

Answer telephones, intercom and window reception in a courteous and professional manner

Perform computer functions required for completion of tasks: data entry, printing, worksheets, reports, result inquiry

Respond to inquiries concerning patient lab values, reference ranges, specimen requirements, procedures, time required for tests and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis

Resolve specimen or order-related problems

Perform computer functions required for completion of tasks: data entry of patient information and tests requested, printing, worksheets, reports, result inquiry, etc.

Attend division and department staff meetings

Promote and contribute to the development of teamwork in the service and working relationships between the laboratory and other departments

Complete compliance, safety and other training relevant to job functions as assigned


Completion of a phlebotomy course

Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy (MA-P) certification with the WA State Department of Health


High school graduation or equivalent


One year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience OR completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists


Equivalent education/experience.


Associates or bachelor degree in science

Experience in a major medical hospital laboratory

Experience with laboratory information system


May be required to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, including but not limited to UWMC, HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCCA, Roosevelt, Rosen, etc.

May be required to work weekends and holidays.

Are considered essential staff and required to report to work in inclement weather.
