UW Medicine's IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a Sr. Medical Device Integration Analyst!

UW Medicine's Information Technology Services (ITS) department is a shared services organization that supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake Campus (UWMC-Montlake), UW Medical Center-Northwest Campus (UWMC-NW), Valley Medical Center (VMC), UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), UW Physicians (UWP), UW School of Medicine (SOM) and Airlift Northwest (ALNW). In addition, UW Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Children's University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research and Seattle Children's). ITS is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support all of these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the UW Medicine mission.

In collaboration with UW Medicine IT Services ('ITS') and under the general guidance of the Data Integration Services Manager, the primary focuses of the Sr. Medical Device Integration Analyst ('Sr. Analyst) position are:

Performing complex programming in the development and implementation of Medical Device Integrations with Capsule SmartLinx and patient monitoring devices including Phillips, Spacelabs, and OBIX.

Implementing and supporting medical device integrations, ensuring integrity of data and minimizing disruption to customers.

The Sr. Analyst is responsible for the development, implementation, and subsequent support of Medical Device Integrations (MDI) that transfer information between medical devices, Capsule software, and Epic Bridges for UW Medicine. Reporting to the Manager of Data Integration Services (DIS), this position is an active member of the DIS team, which is responsible for integration interfaces between UW Medicine systems and external systems. Functions will be performed in partnership with ITS customer groups and internal IT staff including other developers, project managers, and operational staff. This position participates in the overall development and management of complex, mission critical, enterprise information systems, with an emphasis on clinical and financial system interfaces across all of UW Medicine.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Design, Development, and Support (50%)

Design, Development and Support (50%)

Resolves biomedical device integration issues for Capsule systems, including Smartlinx and Neurons within the established service level agreements

Supports the Epic Bridges interfaces which integrate Device data into Epic, manages device error work queues, supports MDI interfaces for the quarterly Epic releases and any other Epic-wide initiatives.

Reviews, analyzes, develops and modifies system functionality using logic and creativity with minimal direction to meet business and system needs.

Monitors interfaces for optimal performance; analyzes issues and take appropriate corrective action if performance issues are identified.

Works with users to understand any reported issues or concerns with existing production systems.

Works with other system programmers to minimize design and application program risks associated with interface implementation.

Reviews enhancement specifications, develops test scripts and performs integration tests on delivered enhancements.

Designs and implements appropriate fixes following established design/build standards and operational processes and procedures for the team. Solutions should be focused towards more standardized solutions (where possible) to minimize complexity and ease long-term support costs.

Performs thorough QA testing and defect remediation to ensure all interfaces are of the highest reliability.

Deploys solutions upon successful completion of testing. Implements Medical Device integrations in UW Medicines Capsule Environment, ensuring integrity of data.

Creates and maintains documentation of assigned production systems per established documentation standards.

Collaborates as member of a high performing member as described previously.

Provides excellent customer service engaging in the use of clear, comprehensive, and frequent communication with customers.

Conducts initial investigation of UW Medicine IT Services Project Intake requests related to Medical Device Integrations, and provides feasibility and priority feedback.

For internal (team) projects, uses project management principles to plan, design, and test, execute, and monitor efforts necessary to enhance production systems.

Responsible for confidential information and the use of confidential data and the need for discretion and caution in the use and protection of such material, ensuring compliance with accrediting agencies guidelines and laws such as those outlined by JCAHO and HIPAA.

Project Work (30%)

Participates in the implementation of ITS organization level projects including new Medical Device Integrations

Uses the skills defined above to successfully implement interface projects in Bridges and Capsule in close collaboration with the Project Manager and the Project Management Office

Proactively communicates with the Project Manager regarding the status of work and to escalate obstacles to implementing the solution

Works with application teams to understand workflows and how they impact the integration.

Develops, supports, and maintains all required system design and build documentation.

Participates in and coordinates status meeting and conference calls as needed for assigned projects.

Plans, conducts, and documents proceedings of meetings as needed.

Completes specific team task activities as outlined in the project work plan and other job-related duties as assigned.

Provides interface related information for the development to test scripts and actively participate in testing with the project team.

Prepares interface documentation for in preparation for transition to operational support.

Participates in project go lives, and post go live support

Collaborates with other team members to ensure broad knowledge to drive the project work and proper preparation for operational handoffs.

Creates or updates documentation associated with the project work.

Schedules and executes timely operational handoff at the close of a project

Works directly with vendors as needed in all phases of project implementation.

Develops SLAs for projects related to Bridges and Capsule system support.

Team Process Improvements (15%)

ITS is committed to continuous improvement. Each team member is responsible for contributing to the improvement of the team processes by defining, documenting and adhering to team standards. Team standards provide a framework for high performing teams and improve the efficiency of the team. Some of the process improvement initiatives team members will implement and support include:

Developing and supporting the change management process for the team.

Implementing SharePoint to consistently organize the team's knowledge.

Defining coding standards for analysts.

Participation in other ITS teams process improvement initiatives.

Personal Development Activities (5%)

Regularly participates in technology training in support of the analysts work, with a focus towards new capabilities of existing tools.

Participates in technical user groups and online forums to maintain current knowledge of interface technologies and how they may be effectively used to solve business problems.

Participates in team training activities, both as a presenter and as a learner.

Continually works to develop and improve personal (soft) skills aimed at improving communication and team cohesion.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or other field that emphasizes technical and analytical skills or equivalent combination of education/experience.

4+ years' experience must include the following:

3+ years' practical experience with implementing, supporting, and troubleshooting Capsule System including Neurons and servers.

3+ years experience integrating between an EHR and Medical Devices including Philips, SpaceLabs, and OBIX.

Detailed knowledge of HL7 standard version 2.x, TCP/IP, and serial communications.

3+ years experience with a major electronic health record system with an understanding of hospital/clinic work flows such as scheduling/Reg/ADT, orders of ancillary systems, patient care.

3+ years of successful systems analysis and/or programming on mission-critical, clinical information systems.

Experience with formal project management methods in conjunction with the management of clinical information system projects.

Knowledge of database structures and administration, programming languages, networked environment (prefer NT/UNIX), TCP/IP network protocol, Windows NT work stations and servers, Microsoft Office, and the internet.

Ability to translate business needs into technology requirements.

Ability to conduct research into software solutions and products independently.

DESIRED

Previous experience in and knowledge of academic healthcare systems and/or operational environments.

Advanced degree (e.g., Master's, PhD, etc.)

Epic Bridges Certification strongly preferred.

Experience with other Epic suite applications.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is an Information Technology deadline-driven work environment.

The individual in this position is expected to work normal daytime hours. The work may be performed in either an office environment or by telecommuting with manager approval; however, significant off-hours and weekends may be needed to resolve problems and respond to emergencies. This individual is expected to be available for emergencies (business continuity/disaster recovery efforts) on a 24x7 basis as needed.

Will be required to participate in a 24x7 on call rotation.

Must have the ability to meet in person as directed by manager.

Because of the physically separated sites for UW Medicine, this position requires the ability to travel to alternative work locations as needed.

Must coordinate projects without direct supervisory authority.

Must work within the constraints of multiple technical environments.

ITS provides services to all UW Medicine organizations - HMC, UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-NW, VMC, UWNC, UWP, SOM, and ALNW. The individual in this position must learn many organizational structures and cultures and continually foster collaboration.

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
