Job Description:

Purpose:The purpose of this position is to provide support to other Orientation & Mobility Specialists (O&M), facilitate communication within the group, and provide Orientation & Mobility training, education, consultation, and technical assistance to people who are blind, DeafBlind, or blind with other disabilities, as well as education to employees and community members, and various departments throughout the Lighthouse.Responsibilities:Supervisory duties:

  • Provide day to day support and oversight of Lighthouse based Orientation & Mobility Specialists
  • Provide ongoing supervision, information, support and training to direct reports; provide feedback on work product; complete annual reviews, work plans, and recommend development goals
  • Maintain program function, policy, and practices that provide quality supports by monitoring program and providing timely information as requested; supports contemporary programming and practices; adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Provide education/consultation and technical assistance to Lighthouse personnel and community members as appropriate, including all Lighthouse locations. Some travel with advance notice may be required.
  • Provide mentoring & training support as needed for new staff (training Apricot, Department and Lighthouse protocol).
  • Serve as point person for working cooperatively with Accommodations, Operations, Safety, and Maintenance personnel to make recommendations for accommodations; directs work to others that aligns with their areas of knowledge and expertise
  • Work cooperatively with local transit authorities to provide consultation, input and expertise
  • Attend staff, program and department meetings as required. Ensure other Orientation & Mobility staff have information and support they need to maintain effectiveness.
  • Represent Orientation & Mobility Team organization wide by attending meetings, presenting as needed
  • Ensure clear communication regarding required activities for contracts & grants, such as Metro contract, and others
  • Participate in development of program-wide goals and measurements on behalf of Orientation & Mobility Team
  • Oversee coordination of internshipsOrientation & Mobility Direct Service Job Duties:
    • Organize, plan and provide Orientation & Mobility evaluation and instruction to people who are blind, blind with other disabilities, or DeafBlind, including employees and community members
    • Work cooperatively to develop and maintain relationships with adaptive equipment vendors
    • Assess basic low vision needs for employees and other participants and refer to Independent Living Program as appropriate
    • Coordinate with other Orientation & Mobility Specialists to ensure other Lighthouse sites such as Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) and Contract Management Services (CMS) have training and accommodation support or as needed (magnifiers, CCTVs, lighting recommendation, mobility instruction, cane tips, etc)
    • Travel to other Base Supply Centers (BSC) as requested, and/or find local resource to provide training.
    • Support DeafBlind Retreat as needed
    • Deliver services defined in grants and contracts
    • Develop and maintain positive relationships in the Orientation and Mobility professional arena
    • Maintain files, provide documentation, data collection, reports, and summaries as neededMinimum Requirements:
      • BA or MA in Orientation and Mobility required
      • ACVREP certification required
      • Five (5) + years experience providing Orientation and Mobility training and instruction required
      • Dual competency in Orientation & Mobility and Rehabilitation Teaching or Low Vision Specialist preferred
      • ASL 4 skills or above preferred
      • Three years supervisory experience preferred
      • Demonstrated knowledge of a wide range of accommodation resources
      • Ability to problem solve effectively
      • Ability to take initiative, function autonomously, and be dependable.
      • Ability to produce high-quality written documents, including correspondence, reports, etc
      • Comprehensive knowledge of PC applications, including MS Office applications, browsers, and database software.
      • Professional demeanor
      • Demonstrated excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
      • Willingness to work as a team member
      • Mature judgment and sensitivity in interpersonal relations and among diverse groups
      • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
