The UW Department of Pediatrics has an outstanding opportunity for
a Communications Specialist.
The UW Department of Pediatrics is dedicated to improving the
health of all children by educating physicians of the future,
advancing research, advocating for children and providing the
nation's best pediatric clinical care. We are committed to building

The Department of Pediatrics is the second largest department in
the School of Medicine with over 1500 staff, faculty, trainees and
students and an annual budget of approximately $146M consisting of
patient care revenue, sponsored research funds, endowments and
gifts, state funds and affiliated hospital funding associated with
the academic programs within the department. The Department of
Pediatrics has a close affiliation with Seattle Children's Hospital
(SCH) and Seattle Children's Research Institute (SCRI). Faculty
members and staff employees in the Department are located at both
institutions. In addition, the Department deploys staff to the Fred
Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) and other non-UW Medicine
affiliated institutions in the region. This role works across units
and functions to design and implement an integrated marketing and
communications strategy reflective of the Department of Pediatrics
mission and identity.
The Department of Pediatrics Central Administration Team has an
outstanding opportunity for a full time Communications Specialist.
The Communications Specialist is responsible for supporting the
Department's internal and external communications & marketing
efforts. Under the supervision of the Communications Manager, this
position collaborates closely with Department staff, faculty, and
leadership to carry out the mission of the Department.
This position is primarily onsite but will have some hybrid working
opportunities after an initial training period.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Content Management
--- Produce original content for use across multiple
channels-including website, newsletters, and social media-that
tells the story of UW Pediatrics.
--- Collaboratively curate and edit content from department and
partner sources.
--- Manage editorial calendar in partnership with multiple
departmental stakeholders.
--- Coordinate upkeep of dynamic and static website content.
--- Facilitate, monitor, and grow social media channels to increase
awareness of department activities, build partner relationships,
engage key audiences, and integrate with department website.
--- Monitor and report on content, visitor, and traffic trends
using Google Analytics.
Internal Communications
--- Own the production and coordination of weekly and monthly
newsletters.
--- Work collaboratively with the Chair's Office and Executive
Committee to facilitate communications needs.
--- Oversee department communication distribution lists and
processes.
--- Contribute to new hire, event, and other cross-departmental
communications.
--- Assist with the development of executive leadership
presentations and communications.
Brand Management
--- Maintain library of brand resources, including PowerPoint and
Word templates, logos, and images.
--- Assist in the development of departmental styles and
standards.
--- Communicate with and assist faculty and staff in transition to
new resources and templates, and advocate for best practices in
communications.
--- Develop photo library that includes approved stock images and
headshots.
--- Maintain regular communication with UW, UW Medicine, and other
marketing contacts to stay current on information and shared
resources.
Other
--- Participate in strategic planning and budgeting
conversations.
--- Help with office duties such as managing printing requests,
purchasing promotional items, responding to inquiries.
--- Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and
strategic initiatives of the department
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
--- Bachelor's Degree in Communication, Journalism, or
Marketing.
--- Two years of experience in marketing, communications, or a
related field.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum
qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a
license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
--- Superior writing and editing skills for a broad spectrum of
communication channels. Excellent proofreading and editing
abilities.
--- Proficiency with social media, including Twitter and
LinkedIn.
--- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to establish
and maintain cooperative and professional working
relationships.
--- Ability to set priorities, take initiative, problem-solve, and
handle multiple projects.
--- Desire to support the department's mission of improving the
health of all children and adolescents.
Desired Experience
--- Proficient with Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop,
Acrobat) or ability and willingness to learn.
--- Experience working in higher education or within a complex
organization.
--- Experience with basic graphic design work for print, web, and
email.
--- Familiarity with Google Analytics, SEO, html and social
media.
