RTINational Inmate Survey - (NIS)RTI International has been
conducting the National Inmate Survey (NIS) since its inception.
This is the fourth round of NIS data collection. According to the
Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), as of the end of 2017, there
were about 1.5 million inmates in federal or state prisons across
the nation. With these large numbers often come overcrowded
conditions and the possibility of inmate sexual victimization.
Inmates are under the care of federal or state authorities, and as
such, should be safe from victimization to the extent prevention of
such activities is possible. Congress recognized that not enough
was known about sexual assault within correctional facilities and
set aside funding to support research and technical assistance. The
law requires the BJS to develop a national data collection on the
incidence and prevalence of sexual victimization within
correctional facilities. Field Interviewers will be working on the
adult correctional facilities component. The purpose of the study
is to gather information about the prevalence of sexual assault in
correctional facilities around the nation. To address existing
problems in collecting data, the NIS uses audio computer-assisted
self-interviews (ACASI). The ACASI methodology involves inmates
responding to a computer questionnaire using a touch screen,
following audio instructions delivered by headphones. Minimum
