IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a
COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN 2!UW Medicine's Information Technology
Services (ITS) department is a shared services organization that
supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview
Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake (UWMC-Montlake),
UW Medical Center-Northwest (UWMC-NW), Valley Medical Center (VMC),
UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), UW Physicians (UWP), UW School of
Medicine (SOM) and Airlift Northwest (ALNW). In addition, UW
Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Children's
University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a
partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research
and Seattle Children's). ITS is responsible for the ongoing support
and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which
support all of these institutions, along with the implementation of
new services and applications that are used to support and further
the UW Medicine mission.In collaboration with UW Medicine IT
Services ('ITS') and under the general guidance of the
Communications Technician Supervisor or Manager, the primary focus
of the Communications Technician 2 ('Technician') position are*
performing complex, mid-level installation, repair, and maintenance
work on major, highly complex, system-wide, high-risk, high-impact,
mission-critical telecommunication and other department supported
systems.RESPONSIBILITIESComplex Communication System Installations,
Maintenance, Programming, and Repairs (80%)* Diagnose,
troubleshoot, repair, maintain, assemble, install, configure and
test highly complex, multi-service telecommunications system
equipment.* Develop, implement and perform preventive maintenance
for assigned communication systems and associated equipment.*
Confer with customers and supervisor to determine system problems
and to fulfill services requirements.* Design and fabricate
specialized interfaces, file transfers, data gathering and
processing apparatus for systems, control apparatus, or
telecommunications equipment.* Design, construct and install
communications links between data terminal and data communications
equipment such as terminals, workstations, printers and computer
ports.System Oversight (10%)* Create and update maintenance records
and department knowledge base systems.* Maintain all appropriate
documentation on equipment and systems in department. * Develop, or
oversee the development and maintenance of, an inventory of spare
parts and supplies.Consultation and Vendor Management (5%)*
Consult, research solutions and advise departmental customers on
acquisition of new telecommunication equipment; provide design
recommendations, equipment lists, project costs, programming,
installation, testing, and training.* Confer with manufacturer and
vendor representatives in determining hardware, software, and
service problems.* Prepare and submit warranty claims, parts and
documentation associated with warranty repairs to vendors.Other
(5%)* Participate in all aspects of improving the team, including
education/training of other team members, and contributing to
process/communication improvement initiatives.* Work with manager
to set professional goals for career development. * Act as back-up
for other team members and functions, as needed.REQUIREMENTS* One
year of experience as a Communications Technician 1 OR Equivalent
education/experience. Additional Department Requirements:*
Proficient experience in MS Word and Excel.* Strong knowledge of
communication systems best practices, installation practices,
safety practices, cable management, usage of hand tools,
termination equipment, use of power tools, and ladder
safety.DESIRED* Previous healthcare or IT experience.* Strong
knowledge of Infection Control Techniques and requirements, use of
Containment Devices, HEPA Filtration equipment, Negative Air
machines, Clean Environmental practices, and Patient
Safety.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT* This classification is in a
bargaining unit. * This is an Information Technology
deadline-driven work environment.* The individual in this position
is expected to work normal daytime hours. The work may be performed
in either an office or medical center environment or by limited
telecommuting with manager approval, during normal business hours;
however, significant off-hours and weekends may be needed to
resolve problems and respond to emergencies. This individual is
expected to be available for emergencies (business
continuity/disaster recovery efforts) on a 24x7 basis as needed. *
Must have the ability to meet in person as directed by manager.*
Because of the physically separated sites for UW Medicine, this
position requires the ability to travel to alternative work
locations as needed. * Must work within the constraints of multiple
technical environments.* ITS provides services to all UW Medicine
organizations - HMC, UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-NW, VMC, UWNC, UWP, SOM,
and ALNW. The individual in this position must learn many
organizational structures and cultures and continually foster
collaboration.* Ability to communicate effectively in English, both
verbally and in writing.* Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. with
assistance on a regular basis.* Must have a valid Washington state
driver's license to enable transportation of UW assets.#monster
