Duties Summary This position is located with the Forest Service Enterprise Program. The incumbent serves as an Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Preparation) responsible for performing timber sale preparation duties including timber marking, timber cruising, and sale layout. Responsibilities All responsibilities listed are at the full performance level, GS-07. Interpreting complex silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber. Developing and drafting timber cruise plans. Laying out timber sale boundaries. Writing reports describing timber sale, resource, topographic features, and compliance of timber marking with guidelines. Providing leadership, and technical and administrative supervision to employees engaged in marking and cruising activities. Travel Required 76% or greater - Extensive travel is required by this position. Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Provide course descriptions as necessary. For the GS-05 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours); OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university with courses related to the occupation of the position. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing crew-based forestry related support work such as selecting and marking individual trees for harvest using well defined marking guidelines, silvicultural prescriptions and related fundamental timber cruising procedures.For the GS-6 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5). Specialized experience is defined as experience selecting and marking trees to be harvested or left uncut, under the direct supervision of a professional forester. For the GS-07 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6). Specialized experience is defined as experience assisting in development and drafting of timber cruise plans. Assisting in lay out of timber sale boundaries in accordance with environmental assessments and other instruction(s). Drafting reports describing timber sale, resource, topographic features, and compliance of timber marking with guidelines. Providing leadership and supervision to employees engaged in marking and cruising activities.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
