The Enterprise Records and Health Information (ERHI) has an outstanding opportunity for a FULL TIME (100% FTE, 40-HOURS PER WEEK), DAY SHIFT, CODING EDUCATION ANALYST. Coding Education Analysts are responsible for performing daily activities related to auditing, education, and training of one or more content areas ERHI has coding oversight for. All Coding Education Analysts function as part of a departmental team to accomplish department activities, and work cooperatively with other ERHI and UW Medicine staff to identify and resolve shared issues and concerns. In addition, they may participate in committees and serve on process improvement projects as assigned.


  • Perform coding audits, analyze results and create audit reports
  • Provide education and training on the results of internal audits and partner with Compliance on external audit education
  • Review DRG and CPT claim denials for commercial payers
  • Maintain written documentation of actions, activities or assessments (e.g., investigations, patient rights, audits, process improvement projects, corrective action plans, education and training plans) in accordance with state and federal law, and institutional policies
  • Respond to general coding questions (ICD, DRG, CPT and HCPCS)
  • Engage in the development and/or implementation of audit/monitoring plans
  • Report on unit activities and maintain unit records
  • Monitor regulatory developments, and help develop Coding program policies and procedures
  • Manage the daily activities of the coding content-related responsibilities
  • Serves as a content expert, developing and delivering ad hoc training, and investigating Coding concerns
  • Conducts auditing or monitoring activities with a focus on Outpatient and Emergency Medicine Coding
  • Provide education and training on the results of internal audits and partner with Compliance on external audit education
  • Provide consultation and best practice guidance to engage and influence outcomes

  • Bachelors degree in a Health Sciences discipline, Business Administration or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience
  • Minimum of 3 years increasingly responsible related experience, including coding auditing, analysis, education and training
  • Coding and documentation expertise in either inpatient or outpatient facility coding
  • Current coding certification of a minimum of one of the following credentials: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CIC, COC, CIRCC, RCC
  • Extensive knowledge of ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding principles and guidelines
  • A high level of knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology in order to code the highly complex records of a Level I trauma center
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications and electronic medical records systems
  • Successful experience in working within a multifaceted, highly matrixed organization

  • Experience in an academic healthcare environment
  • Demonstrated excellence in developing education for healthcare professionals
  • Experience and proficiency with Epic and/or Cerner Experience with 3M encoder Pathology Coding experience
